Crestone Peak
March 4, 2007

Partners: Frank Konsella, Pete Sowar, John Jasper, Chris Webster, Pam Rice

Route Description: Began at Cottonwood Creek TH. Skied South Couloir.

Data: Began at TH at 5:30 am (around 8,400 ft). TFour of us (except Pam and Chris) missed a turn out of the original valley and went too far up. We realized this after not seeing Pam and Chris for 2 hrs and then headed up to a col where we spotted Crestone Needle. We then skied down to the base of Crestone Peak (Cottonwood Lake, about 12,300 ft, around 1:30 pm) where we ran into Pam and Chris. We then boot packed (with crampons) up the South Couloir to the summit. I summited around 4:30 pm (14294 ft). We skied back down and were past the cliff band we were worried about before dark which was at 6:30 pm. The trees were tight and we walked the last two hours out of the trial (took skis off around 10,000 ft). Arrived at the car around 10 pm. Total vert: 5800 ft. Total vert skied: about 4, 200 ft. Time: 16.5 hours
